Sticks Picked Up

Yes, I finally got it! I managed to secure the wonderful Stick Figure Tarot deck, created by Lar deSouza. This is the first edition, the one printed in black ink. (The second printing used green ink.) The very best part is, after seeing this deck listed at various outlets for $250 and up, I got it for a much (much) more reasonable price. I am very happy with it.

Some weeks ago, I wrote about wishing that Patrick Valenza of Deviant Moon would release a giclee of his “Mortally Inflicted” mermaid print – and, sure enough, he did! So I dutifully bought one, and it arrived safely today, in a completely flat, hand-decorated package.

Pick Up Sticks…

What does this image make you think of? It’s the Stick Figure Tarot, a wonderful deck that is long out of print.

I believe the green ink denotes the second edition (the first set used black ink). Can anyone verify that?

If you’re reading a blog like this, you must be familiar with the Deviant Moon Tarot, created by Patrick Valenza. It’s my personal favorite deck, and it’s been extremely popular since its introduction, winning accolades at Aeclectic Tarot in 2008, 2009 and 2010 (2011 results still pending).

What you might not know is that Patrick has a pretty cool blog about his deck, called Deviant Moon, where he offers behind-the-scenes peeks, sneak peeks at projects in development – and other artwork. He not only sells limited-edition signed decks, but also giclee prints. (You can also pick up Deviant Moon decks from U.S. Games Systems.)

The other day he posted the wonderful piece of mermaid art seen here. It’s apparently called “Mortally Inflicted,” and  I’m not sure what Patrick’s plans are for it, but hope he will offer it as a giclee print for sale. Maybe if enough people request it, he’ll run off some prints to sell.

I am boiling mad right now, as well as distraught, because I missed out on a tarot deck I had been watching on eBay for the past week. And here’s why: I was so distracted at work that I forgot the auction was ending today! Aaaaaargggh!

The deck I wanted was the International Icon Tarot, and it is another one of those decks I have been patiently stalking on eBay for quite a long time. I’ve seen the deck for about $30 plus shipping in one or two other places, so I’ve been looking to buy it at auction.

After months of waiting, I finally located one on eBay. I didn’t immediately place a bid because I didn’t want to tip my hand too early; I was going to wait until the end was near, then swoop in and snipe it away with a decisive bid. But I never got the chance, because I didn’t have the opportunity to be online when the auction ended. The most painful part of it all is that the deck went for a very reasonable price — one I was sure I could have beaten, had I been online.

Ah, well, the best-laid plans…

As I have been delving deeper into tarot card reading and deck collecting, I have frequently heard people say that certain decks will “call” to you. I thought I had experienced this phenomenon any time I spotted an interesting deck that I wanted to add to my collection.

I was wrong.

I recently stumbled across a few images of the Melthelm Abstract Tarot, and now I know what it means to have a deck calling to me. This deck is haunting me. I see it in my dreams; I catch myself musing about it during downtime at work. I seek out images of it online — and, sadly, there are not many to see.

Off the Shelf…

Sorry I’ve been out of blogging lately, but the banalities of real life sometimes take up more time than we would like — even if it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

I have had to put my tarot-collecting on the shelf (so to speak) for a while, but in case anyone has been wondering, that elusive Wormweird deck showed up a couple of days after my last whining post about waiting by the mailbox. (Wouldn’t you know it, right?)

Anyway, I feel like the the Wormweird was worth the wait. It’s colorful and lurid and wonderfully twisted in a way that really connects with me.

I have recently started stalking a few decks (that shall remain nameless for now) on eBay, so we’ll see what new treasures I can uncover…
